Day 5

We got off to a bit of a slow start, but eventually we all breakfasted and gathered our beachwear. After a stop at Boss Frog's to rent snorkel gear, we drove north along the West Maui coast to the beautiful Kapalua Bay beach. It was raining when we got there, but that passed off quickly and the warm tropical sun came out. Jess had to take a call for work, then she joined the others. The mothers were lounging on beach chairs, while Jer and Will were snorkeling around the bay, scoping out the best spots. Eventually, they rejoined the ladies on the beach. After a brief rest and water break, Jer took Jess and Suzanne out to see the beautiful corals and colorful fish, including a long green trumpetfish, several parrotfish, a Hawaiian state triggerfish, angelfish, butterflyfish, a snowflake eel, etc. It was at least as good as Molokini, but the surf was a bit rougher.

After Jer and Will went out for another snorkel, we were all getting hungry, so we rinsed off at the beach showers and got dressed. We drove back down to the northern edge of Lahaina, where we had delicious local food at Aloha Mixed Plate (shoyu chicken, kalbi ribs, teriyaki beef, kalua pork, fried ono, etc.). It was very reasonably priced and really hit the spot after the morning's exertions.

We returned to our condo for showers and a rest, but the siren song of ice cream was impossible to ignore. We pulled ourselves together and walked down Front Street to Ono Gelato, where we all tasted flavor after flavor before making decisions. The chocolate sorbetto was like frozen frosting, the coffee with mac nuts and chocolate chunks was almost as rich, making the vanilla mac nut and Maui gold pineapple seem light by comparison. It really hit the spot!

We grabbed the car and headed to the free hula show at the Lahaina Cannery Mall. We didn't stay for the whole thing, but the first couple of dances were done by adorable little girls. We also saw an older (and quite talented) mother-daughter duo. We were glad to have seen it, but it wasn't really our thing. After the show, Jess and Will returned to our condo, while Jer, Pam and Suzanne went to Foodland to grab a few supplies. Jess had to work for a couple hours, so everyone else read until bedtime.
