Jess got up a bit before the alarm clock and showered, while Jer slept in a bit. Then we had our mini-breakfast (packaged croissants, cookies, juice, Nescafe and lemon tea) and Jer showered and got ready to go out. We headed to Taqueria Honorio, but the cart wasn't there! After wandering around a bit, we ended up at Aca-Taco, where Jer had a chorizo taco and Jess had a bean one and a queso fresco (tangy farmer's cheese) one, plus we split another fresh orange juice. Then we returned to Posada 06 and checked out, after a thoroughly enjoyable stay.
We took a combi (shared van) from Tulum to Playa, where - after a bit of wandering - we found the combi stand for the vans to Cancun. We had our combi drop us off at the Grand Mayan Riviera Maya, where we attended a timeshare-like sales pitch. They fed us a tasty brunch (we had fruit, churros and fresh juice, plus Jer had spicy fish soup and Jess had a chicken enchilada with tomatillo salsa) and showed us the lovely grounds (where we saw a very large iguana). Then they tried for an hour or so to convince us to buy a unit. They failed, of course, and eventually gave us our parting gift and a complimentary taxi to the Ultramar ferry terminal. We met a nice British couple who also decided against buying at the Grand Mayan, and we swapped travel stories along the way. We made it to the dock with enough time to buy tickets for the next sailing, and we had a slightly choppy crossing to Isla Mujeres.
Our hotel, Las Palmas, was only a few blocks from the ferry dock on Isla Mujeres, though we had to ask for directions a couple of times as not all the intersections have street signs. When we arrived, the friendly proprietress showed us to Room 6, a queen room on the second floor (it was simple, with a tiny bathroom and A/C, but freshly renovated and very clean), and pointed out the hotel's roof deck and dipping pool. She also recommended a number of local restaurants and attractions.
After settling in and washing the spray (from the crossing) off our glasses, we headed out. After wandering for a bit, we decided to stop at Cafe Hidalgo for a pre-dinner crepe, as we were too hungry to make a rational dinner choice. The tomato, olive and mozzarella crepe was delicious, as was the "salad" (really more of a miniature salad bar with separate piles of lettuce, tomatoes, fried potatoes, roasted zucchini, carrots and sauteed onion, with a side of oil-and-parsley dressing).
Thus fortified, we wandered around a bit more before deciding on a light dinner at Bucaneros. We both had black tea, and Jer ordered guacamole while Jess got nachos sencillos (with beans, cheese, tomatoes, salsa fresca and excellent sour cream). It was perhaps not the most authentic, but it hit the spot.
We contemplated ice cream but instead decided to come back to the hotel and sit in the courtyard, playing with the hotel puppy (Chiquito, a poodle mix) and chatting with the proprietress and other guests. It was a lovely evening, but a bit breezy to sit on the roof deck. Jer looked at pictures and Jess updated this journal. Then Jess got sleepy, so we had to go upstairs and head to bed.
