The Parthenon, Athens

Before our Athens Free Walking Tour, I hadn't appreciated that the Acropolis was essentially a religious site, visited by ordinary citizens only for major festivals and as a safe-harbor in times of siege. That made our visit to the Acropolis seem even more special. The ascent was a small price to pay for the chance to appreciate the grand scale of its temples, particularly the Parthenon. Having seen it in person helped us really appreciate the Parthenon Gallery at the Acropolis Museum later in the day.
