The "Westerner with a Thai hat" at the Grand Palace, Bangkok
Another of King Chulalongkorn's architectural surprises was the wonderful Chakri Maha Prasat Hall. Although designed by a British architect to have a domed roof, the king's courtiers convinced him that a Thai-style gabled roof would be more fitting, given the building's location. The result was "the Westerner with a Thai hat", whose whimsical design was enhanced by its lollipop-style topiaries.
