Before he was sent off to become the ill-fated Emperor of Mexico, Archduke Maximilian built this gorgeous retreat on the edge of the Adriatic Sea outside Trieste. While the interiors are beautiful and definitely worth visiting, on a sunny day the gardens and grounds tend to steal the show.
