Roatán Recommendations:
  • Time of Year: Early June is a good time to visit: less busy than high season and less hot than midsummer.
  • Accommodations: Mame Trees  has clean, spacious, basic studios on the main road, across from the beach.
  • Diving: Roatán Divers was well run, with attentive DMs and staff that worked hard to form groups with similar skill levels.
  • Wildlife: Daniel Johnson's Monkey and Sloth Hangout was silly but fun. Visitors can't touch the sloths but the monkeys and macaws are very interactive.
  • Eating: Honduran food is delicious. We enjoyed baleadas (folded, filled tortillas) from street vendors (like Karen) or Calelu's; anafre (bean and cheese dip) at Booty Bar; and fresh seafood, especially at Island Culture and Anthony's Chicken & More.
  • Sweets: The sorbetto at Costa Dulce was decent (better than their gelato), but still not as tasty as the fruit shakes we had elsewhere (especially Calelu's). The cinnamon roll at Sandy Buns is a must, and we enjoyed the apple pie at Cafe 314.
  • Drinks: The Roatán Island Brewing brown ale and cider weren't our thing. We preferred other drinks, especially the cocktails at Tita's Pink Seahorse and Jess's rum punch at Blue Marlin.
